The ancient Greeks and Romans wore Amethyst as an amulet and drank from vessels made from the stone in the belief that it would prevent them from getting drunk because the gemstone's name came from the Ancient Greek words for not intoxicated. Medieval European soldiers believed it would protect them in battle by keeping them clear headed and by healing wounds.
