Rose Quartz Properties and History

Rose Quartz is a quartz with a surprising range of colour; from the palest of pink to an almost orange red rose hue. There is some debate as to the reason for the colouring of Rose Quartz. It is usually believed to be due to trace amounts of titanium, iron, or manganese being present in the stone but recent X-ray diffraction studies suggest that this might not be so. The studies suggest that the colour is because of microscopic fibers of, possibly, dumortierite within the quartz. Like other coloured quartzes it does fade in sunlight. Rose Quartz is given as an alternate gift to the traditional cotton for the 2nd wedding anniversary. Its associations with love make it a perfect romantic gift.
The History of Rose Quartz
There are many legends and myths surrounding Rose Quartz. One of my favourite is that the Greek god Eros took pity on mortals when he saw the misery and lonliness caused by anger and so created Rose Quartz to bring love into our hearts. Isis, an Egyptian goddess, searched for rose quartz in the river to keep her young and beautiful. The Assyrians made Rose Quartz jewellery as far back as 600BC, the Romans carved seals from the stone and throughout the middle ages it was given to young girls as a love charm.
